It’s been about a week since the reveal trailer for Super Mario Odyssey was released. Super Mario fan excitement is at an all-time high. The trailer for Super Mario Odyssey looks beautiful, brand new, and fresh. Now is a better time than any to take an in-depth look at our first trailer, analyze, and predict what’s to come this Holiday season.
As the trailer opens, we’re dropped into a metropolitan area called New Donk City. Unless you’ve been playing GameBoy under a bed your whole life, you’ll immediately recognize the resemblance to New York City. Mario is finally taking on The Big Apple a.k.a. home of ComedyNGaming. It’s safe to say, I like where this is going already. New Donk City seems to be a clever reference to our favorite tie-wearing ape, Donkey Kong. The streets are seemingly named after Donkey Kong’s friends and family. This first street, Dixie Street is clearly named after Diddy Kong’s girlfriend, Dixie Kong. It makes you wonder how many other easter eggs and references we will get in this game. The Empire State Building makes a cameo as well.
Mario randomly pops out of a manhole in the ground and emerges into this new city setting. The first thing I noticed were the question marks in the pedestrian lights which bare resemblance to the iconic golden question blocks found in previous Mario games. It’s dope to see how Nintendo integrates Mario’s world into our modern world. You can spot some fire escapes in the background, which will hopefully be used for some awesome climbing action. A billboard saying Diddy’s Mart is in the background, another Donkey Kong character reference. Diddy’s could possibly be an actual in-game store where we purchase upgrades or even costumes. Mario’s clothes have never looked so detailed. The stitches in his overalls and shine on his boots really showcase Switch’s potential graphically.
Mario runs through the middle of the street using the hood of a taxi to swing on an adjacent street light, whilst leaving a trail of mini clouds in his wake. The physics in this game just look absolutely stunning. Swinging from light pole to light pole has never looked so fun. Here the street sign reads EXPRESSO ST. Buildings are lined up with flags reading New Donk City.
The most exciting part of this trailer is seeing all of the world’s Mario will be exploring this time around. Here he’s seen running around a vegetable world. In the background, we see some eggplants, apples, tomatoes, cauliflower, etc. There’s a fork donning a chef’s hat stuck in the ground. You can spot a little robot that resembling R.O.B the Robot as well. The colors in this world look fantastic and it is a nice change of scenery from the grittiness of New Donk City.
Similar to the head shaped spaceship from Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario flies to each world in a flying machine resembling a top hat. If you pause at :43 seconds, you will see that there is some sort of blue sphere object that resembles a globe on the left. This will most likely be where the player goes to select which world they want traverse next. Bowser is also seen with a top hat later on in the trailer. I wonder what the correlation is with all these top hats?
Here we see Mario jammin’ to some boombox tunes in the middle of a forest world. There is also what seems to resemble a robotic pinata behind him, I wonder if that is related in any way to the R.O.B robot we saw earlier in that vegetable/fruit world. Back to the dancing, it looks like this may be some form of a minigame.
This might just be the most interesting part of the trailer. Mario can now use his hat in a variety of different ways. Here he’s seen using it as a platform to get to the other building. This is a very intriguing idea. I like to imagine that Mario’s hat will have a variety of utilities in this game other than what we can see here
Of course, no Mario game is complete without Bowser. King Koopa is seen here clutching the Princess closely while wearing a very dapper white suit, it goes well with the spikes I might add.
Not only did he kidnap Peach again but now Bowser is advertising it all over New Donk City! The graphics in this shot are impeccable, Mario getting soaked in the rain looks very realistic and it captures his sorrow quite elegantly. Peach looks terrified in a billboard that reads “A Royale Wedding”. It looks like Bowser wants to make this kidnapping a matrimonial one, it would explain the white suit.
At the very end of the trailer, we see Mario’s hat gain a pair of eyeballs. I predict his hat will be a similar character to F.L.U.D.D from Super Mario Sunshine. It will accompany Mario on his journey and also add a new element of gameplay. Unlike F.L.U.D.D, Mario’s hat seems to be more of a puzzle mechanic. Although, that’s only my guess. I’m very interested to see how it will be incorporated into the game. They clearly have quite a bit planned for the hat to give him a spot on the logo.
It will be a long time until we can get our hands on Odyssey, but I really like the direction they are going in with this game. It doesn’t seem like this will be a generic Mario game with coins, bricks, and goombas. Telling by the trailer, you can see that a lot of time and effort is being put into this game. It’s exciting to see Nintendo explore new horizons with this franchise. I’m sure Super Mario Odyssey is going to be a huge console seller.
